Court Interpreter Training Course

  • 2004 - PA Certification Program developed
  • Governed by Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC)

    Purpose: to assure qualified interpreters are available in all PA counties to LEP (Limited English Proficient) persons and to develop uniform training standards

  • 2010 - Rules revised to require all courts to provide and pay for certified interpreters in both civil and criminal cases


General Requirements

General Requirements for Court Interpreter

  • Native-like mastery of English and another language
  • Wide general knowledge of subjects equivalent to 2 years of college
  • Perform the three modes of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive and sight)
  • Abide by the code of ethics and professional responsibility


Course Information

  • Non-credit professional development training course (12 weeks) without certificate
  • Prepare qualified candidates to take written part of PA State Certification exam for court Interpreters
  • Courses will cover:
  • Standardized test taking techniques
  • Advance English and Legal subjects
  • Ethics and Professional Code regulating court interpreters

  • T/TH Evenings
  • English class starts at 5:30pm
  • Legal class starts at 7:15pm
  • Each class is 1.5 hours
