Governed by Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC)
Purpose: to assure qualified interpreters are available in all PA counties to LEP (Limited English Proficient) persons and to develop uniform training standards
2010 - Rules revised to require all courts to provide and pay for certified interpreters in both civil and criminal cases
General Requirements
General Requirements for Court Interpreter
Native-like mastery of English and another language
Wide general knowledge of subjects equivalent to 2 years of college
Perform the three modes of interpretation (simultaneous, consecutive and sight)
Abide by the code of ethics and professional responsibility
Course Information
Non-credit professional development training course (12 weeks) without certificate
Prepare qualified candidates to take written part of PA State Certification exam for court Interpreters
Courses will cover:
Standardized test taking techniques
Advance English and Legal subjects
Ethics and Professional Code regulating court interpreters
